Fixed Bridges

Dental bridges are fixed (non-removable) dental restorations used to replace one or more missing teeth. By filling the gap created by missing teeth, a dental bridge restores both the appearance and function of your smile.

There are several types of dental bridges available, and your dentist will help determine the best option for your specific needs. The most common type is the traditional dental bridge, which is typically made from porcelain fused to metal or other durable materials.

A traditional bridge consists of two dental crowns placed on the teeth adjacent to the gap, known as abutment teeth. These crowns support the artificial tooth or teeth (called pontics) that fill the space left by missing teeth.

Dental bridges are highly durable and can last many years with proper care. However, like most dental restorations, they may eventually require adjustment, re-cementing, or replacement due to normal wear.

Reasons for a Dental Bridge

  • Replace one or more missing teeth.
  • Maintain the natural shape of your face.
  • Prevent remaining teeth from shifting out of position.
  • Restore normal chewing and speaking ability.
  • Improve the appearance of your smile.
  • Replace a removable partial denture with a fixed solution.

What to Expect When Getting a Dental Bridge

Getting a dental bridge usually requires two or more dental visits.

First Appointment

During the first appointment, the teeth that will support the bridge are carefully prepared by removing a small amount of enamel to allow room for the crowns. Detailed impressions of your teeth are then taken and sent to a dental laboratory where your custom bridge will be created.

A temporary bridge is placed to protect the prepared teeth and maintain function while your permanent bridge is being fabricated.

Second Appointment

At the second appointment, your permanent dental bridge is checked, adjusted for proper fit, and cemented into place. In some cases, the bridge may initially be temporarily cemented to allow your teeth and tissues time to adjust before final placement.

After your bridge is placed, your dentist will provide instructions for proper care. Maintaining good oral hygiene, brushing and flossing daily, and attending regular dental visits will help extend the life of your dental bridge.
