Onlay Restorations
Dental onlays are custom-made restorations used to repair teeth that have been damaged by decay, trauma, or large existing fillings. An onlay may be made from composite material, gold, or tooth-colored porcelain and is fabricated in a professional dental laboratory before being permanently bonded to the tooth by your dentist.
An onlay is sometimes referred to as a partial crown because it restores a larger portion of the tooth than a filling while still preserving more natural tooth structure than a full dental crown.
Dental onlays are commonly recommended when a tooth has significant damage but does not require a full crown. They provide a strong and durable solution while maintaining as much of the natural tooth as possible.
Unlike dental inlays, which fit within the grooves of a tooth, onlays extend over one or more of the chewing cusps of the tooth. This added coverage helps strengthen the tooth and protect it from further damage.
Like most dental restorations, onlays may eventually need replacement due to normal wear. However, with proper care they are highly durable and can last many years while helping maintain a strong, healthy, and natural-looking smile.
Reasons for Dental Onlays
- Repair broken or fractured teeth.
- Restore teeth damaged by decay.
- Replace fractured or worn fillings.
- Strengthen teeth with large existing fillings.
- Improve the appearance of damaged teeth.
What to Expect During the Onlay Procedure
The dental onlay procedure typically requires two appointments to ensure a precise and comfortable fit.
First Appointment
During your first visit, the dentist will remove any decay or old filling material and carefully clean and prepare the tooth. Detailed impressions will then be taken and sent to a dental laboratory where your custom onlay will be created. A temporary filling is placed to protect the tooth while your permanent restoration is being made.
Second Appointment
At your second appointment, the temporary filling will be removed and the custom onlay will be carefully fitted and permanently bonded to the tooth. Minor adjustments may be made to ensure the restoration fits properly and your bite feels comfortable.
After treatment, your dentist will provide care instructions. Maintaining good oral hygiene, eating a healthy diet, and attending regular dental checkups will help extend the life of your dental onlay and keep your smile healthy.
