Root Canal
Root canal therapy is a dental treatment used to save a tooth when the inner nerve and pulp become infected or severely damaged by decay, injury, or bacteria. During the procedure, the infected tissue inside the tooth is carefully removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed to restore its health and function.
Root canal treatment is often the best option for saving a natural tooth that might otherwise need to be extracted. Preserving the natural tooth helps maintain proper chewing, prevents neighboring teeth from shifting, and protects your overall oral health.
Root canal treatments are highly successful and can often last a lifetime with proper care. In some cases, retreatment may be required if a new infection develops in the future.
Signs and Symptoms That May Require a Root Canal
- A small abscess or pimple on the gums.
- Sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures.
- Severe or persistent tooth pain.
- Swelling or tenderness in the gums.
- In some cases, no symptoms may be present.
Reasons for Root Canal Therapy
- Deep decay that has reached the tooth pulp.
- Infection or abscess inside the tooth or near the root.
- Injury or trauma that damages the tooth nerve.
What to Expect During Root Canal Treatment
Root canal therapy usually requires one or more appointments and may be performed by your dentist or an endodontist, a specialist who focuses on root canal procedures.
During the procedure, the tooth is fully numbed to ensure comfort. A protective rubber dam is placed around the tooth to keep it clean and dry. A small opening is created in the tooth to access the infected pulp, and specialized instruments are used to remove the infected tissue, nerve, and bacteria.
Once the inside of the tooth has been thoroughly cleaned and disinfected, the root canals are filled with special dental materials to seal the space and prevent future infection.
In many cases, a dental crown is recommended after root canal treatment to strengthen and protect the tooth. The crown restores the tooth’s appearance and helps prevent fractures while allowing it to function normally.
After treatment, mild sensitivity may occur for a short time as the surrounding tissues heal. Following proper oral hygiene practices and visiting your dentist regularly will help ensure the long-term success of your root canal treatment.
